JAMAICA, N.Y. -- St. Johns University junior pitcher Joe Reid (Rutherford, N.J.) was named the BIG EAST Conferences Co-Pitcher of the Week, it was announced today by league officials. Reid shared the award with Rutgers junior Shaun Parker, who threw a five-inning no-hitter in a nine inning game, which was called due to rain.

Reid, who earns his first weekly conference award, led St. Johns to a 3-0 win over Seton Hall in the opening game of a three-game series on Saturday. The 6-0 right-hander went seven innings against the Pirates, allowing five hits all singles with three walks and eight strikeouts.

The Pirates had base runners in every inning, but only twice did runners reach scoring position. In the fourth, he issued a leadoff walk and gave up a single before striking out two batters, and inducing a popup. In the fifth, back-to-back two-out singles put runners on the corners, but a fly ball ended the inning. The only time he retired the side in order came in the seventh, when he struck out the final batter looking to end the game.

Reid, who threw struck out 11 batters in a memorable start at Seton Hall two years ago as a freshman, has been the Red Storms best starter this season and in the last month, perhaps, the best in the league. In his last four conference starts, he has thrown 24 innings, allowing only five earned runs on 19 hits, with 27 strikeouts for a 1.88 earned run average. Despite those numbers, he had a 1-2 record in that span, with the opposing team outscoring St. Johns 10-5 overall.

He finished the regular season with a 3-3 record and a 3.74 earned run average, striking out 68 batters in 77 innings pitched. In BIG EAST action, he was 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 47 innings pitched. He ranked sixth in the league in innings pitched and held BIG EAST opponents to a .237 batting average.

In two years at St. Johns, Reid has a 5-5 record with a 3.73 earned run average. He has allowed 54 earned runs on 124 hits in 130.2 innings pitched, with 115 career strikeouts. He was the recipient of this years St. Johns Howard Gershberg Award, presented to the top pitcher on the team.

St. Johns finished the 2003 season with a 29-27 overall mark and a 12-14 mark in the BIG EAST.
