JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Freshman first baseman Eddie Schultz (Flemington, N.J) and sophomore Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, Del.) each hit home runs, and eight St. Johns pitchers combined to throw a five-hitter as the Red Storm topped New York Tech, 7-2, on Senior Night at The Ballpark. St. Johns improved to 28-25 with the win, while the Bears fall to 13-30.
St. Johns jumped out to 2-0 lead in the second when Hershelman hit a leadoff single in the second and scored when Schultz hit his sixth home run of the season a blast to left. The Bears cut the lead in half in the third when Joe Minniti scored on a fielders choice, but senior Tom Klemm (Salem, N.H.) struck out the final batter of the inning with runners on the corners to end the threat. The Red Storm extended their lead to 4-1 with two more runs in the fourth. Hershelman doubled and scored when Schultz reached on an error by Tech left fielder Sean Braithwaite. Schultz moved to third on a single from Anthony DeRosa (Salem, N.H.) and scored when freshman Greg Thomson (Levittown, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to left. A solo home run to left from Hershelman his team-leading eighth of the season gave St. Johns a 5-1 lead. New York Tech scored its second run in the seventh off senior reliever Keith Hansen (Glen Cove, N.Y.), who gave up doubles to Mike Kearney and Ronny Reyes, making it a 5-2 game. The Red Storm closed out the scoring in the eighth. Senior Billy Graiser (Muttontown, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single from sophomore Jim Martin (Norwood, Mass.). A sacrifice bunt form junior shortstop Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J.) moved the runners to second and third, and junior <>Jesus Bravo (San Jose, Calif.) delivered both runners home with a single to right. Hershelman finished 3-for-3 for the Red Storm, with a home run, double, single, three runs scored and one RBI, while Schultz went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Graduate student Greg Holmes (Stony Brook, N.Y.) was credited with the win. He threw one inning of perfect relief, improving to 4-4 this season. St. Johns closes out the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Seton Hall. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at noon, with the season finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
