JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The game matched the weather. It was cold and nasty out, and the play of visiting Manhattan and host St. Johns matched it. In the end, St. Johns committed five errors and the Red Storm pitching staff gave up a two-run lead in the top of the ninth as Manhattan posted a come-from-behind 10-9 win on Tuesday night at The Ballpark.

Trailing 9-7 in the ninth, SJU junior reliever Gilbert Fregoso (San Jose, Calif.) hit Matt Cucurullo to lead off the inning and allowed a singled to Wendell Anderson before a fielders choice moved the runners up. Senior Vinnie Mannese (Marlboro, N.Y.) relieved Fregoso and walked Josh Greco to load the bases. Sylvester Gutierrez grounded out to second, scoring Cucurullo and narrowing the gap to one run. Pinch-hitter Eric Fierro then looped a 2-2 offering into right-center, scoring Greco and Anderson, and giving the Jaspers a 10-9 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Manhattan reliever Ian Quinn gave up a one-out single to sophomore Anthony DeRosa (Salem, N.H.), but struck out senior Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, N.Y.) for the second out. DeRosa was thrown out stealing to end the game.

Mannese took the loss for St. Johns, falling to 0-3 this season, while Wilson Resto earned the win, improving to 2-1.

St. Johns had trailed 2-0 after one-half inning of play, but scored runs in the first four innings to take a 7-3 lead.

In the first, the Red Storm narrowed Manhattans lead when Bilezikjian hit a single to drive in DeRosa, who had hit a one-out double. Junior Ray Downs (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was issued a one-out walk in the second and moved to second on a wild pitch before freshman Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, Del.) struck out and reached on a wild pitch, with Downs moving to third. An infield single to Brett Hardie (Toms River, N.J.) brought in the first run and Hershelman scored on a throwing error, giving SJU a 3-2 lead.

Sophomore Jeremy Winter (Cliffside Park, N.J.) hit a leadoff single in third and moved to third on a double to right from senior Jason Kane (Rutherford, N.J.). Downs reached on a fielders choice, scoring Winter, and Hershelman followed with a single, scoring Kane and increasing the SJU lead to three runs, 5-2.

In the fourth, Bilezikjian hit a one-out double to right, moved to third on a single to left from Winters and the bases were loaded after a walk to Kane. Walks to Downs and Hershelman drove in a pair of runs as SJU opened up a 7-2 lead.

Manhattan added a single run in the fourth on an RBI double from Jonathan Holzer, three more in the sixth to cut the SJU lead to one run, 7-6.

The Jaspers had jumped on top in the first with a pair of runs off Bilezikjian. Gary Diaz and Frank Cappello hit singles to lead off the game. After retiring the next two batters, Chris Gaskin delivered a single to right for the first run and a throwing error brought in the second.

St. Johns plays next on Wednesday night, hosting New York Tech at The Ballpark at 7 p.m. First pitch on Senior Night is 7 p.m.
