PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers cleanup hitter Billy McCarthy hit the first offering from St. Johns junior Greg Holmes (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) to the centerfield wall, scoring one run and giving the Scarlet Knights a 6-5 win over the Red Storm, completing a three-game sweep at the Class of 53 Complex on Sunday afternoon.Joe Reid (Rutherford, N.J./St. Marys) in the ninth and gave up a leadoff double to Matt Wolski. After intentionally walking Val Majewski, McCarthy hit the first offering to the wall in center, giving Rutgers (40-13, 18-8) the win.

With the loss, its sixth-straight conference loss, St. Johns finishes the season at 31-22 and 13-13 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm, who entered the weekend in fourth place, finished in fifth place in the conference, missing out on one of the four tournament spots.

St. Johns had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning when junior third baseman Jason Kane (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) hit an RBI single to right, scoring classmate Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond), who hit a two-out single and moved to second on a walk.

Reid appeared to work his way out of a jam in the eighth, but the Scarlet Knights added a run to tie the game. Ryan Lillis was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and pinch-runner Graig Badger moved to second on a ground out. A passed ball moved Badger to third, but he was thrown out in a rundown after a failed sacrifice bunt for the second out. Reid, however, walked Vasquez and Tim Sweeney followed with a double to right-center, tying the game.

St. Johns put runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but was able to muster only two runs on six hits. In the second, junior J.P. Cirigliano (Flushing, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) hit a leadoff double to right-center and moved to third when senior Eric Potts (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park) singled to first. Junior leftfielder Bryan Hedgecock (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and sophomore catcher Asa Grunenwald (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) drove in the games first run with a fly to right. The threat ended, however, when the umpires ruled that Hedgecock left the bag early, giving the Red Storm two outs.

The Scarlet Knights tied it in the bottom of the inning when Billy McCarthy reached on an error, moved to third on Todd Speedys double and scored on Lillis fly to right.

In the third, Reid retired the first two batters, but Val Majewskis double to right scored Wolski, who singled. After walking McCarthy, Speedy pushed a single through the right side, scoring Majewski and giving RU a 3-1 lead.

The Red Storm pieced together a run in the third with the bottom of the lineup helping out. Hedgecock reached on a bunt single and moved to third when Grunenwald blooped a single between three fielders in center. Junior rightfielder Billy Graiser (Muttontown, N.Y./Miller Place) followed with single to right, cutting the lead to 3-2. A walk to freshman Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) loaded the bases with one out, but Bilezikjian grounded into a double play, ending the inning.

The Scarlet Knights, however, added another run in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 4-2 lead. Steve Normane hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a wild pitch and, after a walk to Alberto Vasquez, scored on another wild pitch.

The Red Storm, fighting for their season to continue, came back in the top of the inning. Senior first baseman Chris Fallon (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne), who finishes his career tied for the all-time lead in home runs (35), hit a leadoff double and scored when Kane hit a mammoth home run over the right field fence.

Kane went 2-for-4 with his fifth home run of the season and drove in three runs, while Bilezikjian added two singles and scored a run.
