JAMAICA, N.Y. Senior southpaw Tom Klemm (Salem, N.H.) gave up one run over seven innings and classmate Mike Tamulionis (West Bridgewater, Mass.) threw two innings of relief as the St. Johns baseball team topped Boston College, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark. The Red Storm, who took two of three from the Eagles on the weekend, are now 27-25 overall and 11-12 in the BIG EAST, while BC is now 29-20 and 11-10 in the league.
The Eagles had runners in scoring position in the second off Klemm when Matt Lederhos singled and Ryan Leahy was hit by a pitch with one out. A double steal put runners on second and third when Michael Flynn hit a fly ball to right, but Red Storm senior centerfielder Billy Graiser (Muttontown, N.Y.) saved a run when his throw to catcher Asa Grunenwald (Boalsburg, Pa.) took one bounce and nailed Lederhos at the plate, ending the inning. The Red Storm took advantage and jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore third baseman Jim Martin (Norwood, Mass.) hit a leadoff double down the right field line and moved to third when Grunenwald was out on a sacrifice bunt. Graiser followed with a single to left, bringing home Martin with the first run. Sophomore second baseman Brett Hardie (Toms River, N.J.) followed with single to center, and both runners moved to second after an error by Lederhos. Junior shortstop Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J.) followed with a single through the left side, bring home both runners. After BCs threat in the second, Klemm retired 10 of the next 11 batters, giving up only a fourth inning singled to Jason Delaney, as the Red Storm maintained a 3-1 lead. The Eagles got on board in the sixth, but the damage was kept to a run after Graiser helped out Klemm again. Three-straight one-out singles to right from Garrett Greer, Drew Locke and Delaney loaded the bases for Ryan Morgan. Morgan dropped a single into short centerfield and Graiser came up firing again, making a perfect throw to home to Grunenwald, who took a hard hit from Locke, but was thrown out. Klemm struck out Lederhos, ending the inning. The Red Storm had a chance to extend their lead in the seventh when freshman outfielder Greg Thomson (Levittown, N.Y.) singled and Martin was hit by a pitch, but BC starter Matt ODonnell and reliever Matt Elfeldt were able to retire St. Johns without a run. Klemm gave up a leadoff double in the eighth to Locke and was relieved by senior Mike Tamulionis (West Bridgewater, N.J.), who retired the side in order. St. Johns had another shot in the eighth, when Rozema hit a leadoff double to left-center and moved to third on a single to left from sophomore Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, Del.), but Elfeldt struck out freshman first baseman Eddie Schultz (Flemington, N.J.) and induced junior Anthony DeRosa (Salem, N.H.) into a double play, ending the inning. Klemm went seven innings, yielding one run on nine hits, with no walks and four strikeouts and improved to 5-3 this season. Tamulionis threw two innings, walking one and striking out two for his second save this year. Graiser finished 2-for-3, with a run and an RBI, while Hardie went 2-for-4 with a run. Rozema drove in two runs and had a single and a double, and Martin went 2-for-3. St. Johns will close out its home schedule on Thursday, hosting New York Tech on Senior Night at The Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. For the most-up-to-date information and statistics on St. Johns Athletics, please visit www.RedStormSports.com, or call ourhotline at 1-888-GO-STORM. ### St. Johns Athletics ###
