JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Freshman pitcher Anthony Varvaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) threw a complete game shutout and classmate Greg Thomson (Levittown, N.Y.) slammed two home runs as St. Johns topped Boston College, 13-0, in the nightcap of a doubleheader at The Ballpark on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles held off a late rally from St. Johns in the opener, winning 3-2.

St. Johns is now 26-25 overall and 10-12 in the BIG EAST, while BC falls to 29-19 overall and 11-9 in the league.

In the nightcap, the Red Storm scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, respectively, opening up a 3-0 lead. In the first, junior Derek Sullivan (Lincoln, Calif.) doubled to left, stole third and scored when sophomore Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, Del.) grounded out. Thomson hit the first of his two home runs in the second and freshman Eddie Schultz (Flemington, N.J.) doubled and scored on an error in the fourth, giving St. Johns a 3-0 lead.

Varvaro, meanwhile, kept the Eagles bats in check. BC put runners on base with singles in each of the first three innings, but the freshman right-hander was able to escape without a run. He retired the side in order in the fourth, and the Eagles loaded the bases in the fifth after a single and a pair of walks, but Varvaro induced a ground out to end the inning.

The Red Storm added three more runs in the sixth, aided by a pair of BC errors. Eagles starter Kevin Shepard walked junior Anthony DeRosa (Salem, N.H.), gave up a single to Schultz and hit Thomson before sophomore Brett Hardie (Toms River, N.J.) singled through the left side, bringing home one run and keeping the bases full. Senior Asa Grunenwald (Boalsburg, Pa.) followed with a liner to third that Tom Mackor caught, but his attempt to throw out Thomson at second went to right field, allowing one run to score, and Drew Locke misplayed the overthrow, bringing home another run, as the Red Storm opened a 6-0 lead.

In the seventh, DeRosas drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Schultz laced the second of his two doubles, bringing home Hershelman, who reached on a single. Thomson followed with a blast to right, giving the Red Storm a 10-0.

Varvaro improved to 4-5 with the win. It was his first complete game, and only the second this season for St. Johns. He allowed five hits all singles walked four batters and struck out seven in the win.

Thomson went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Schultz went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a single, three runs scored and one RBI.

In the opener, junior Joe Reid (Rutherford, N.J.) had his third-straight impressive outing, but was not helped out by the Red Storm offense, which left seven runners on base and had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Eagles jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second when Mackor hit and RBI single, scoring Locke, who had a one-out double. The lead grew to 2-0 in the third when Garrett Greer homered to left. In the sixth, Locke walked, moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt and scored when Ryan Leahy singled.

The Red Storm scored twice in the sixth inning, narrowing the gap. Rozema singled and moved to second on a throwing error before coming home on Hershelmans single. A walk to junior Jesus Bravo (San Jose, Calif.) put runners on first and second before DeRosa hit a one-out single to left, bringing home one run and making it a 3-2 game, but the Red Storm would get no closer.

Reid went seven innings in a losing effort, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits, with four walks and seven strikeouts. DeRosa had two singles and drove in one run for the Red Storm.

St. Johns and Boston College wrap up their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch on Mothers Day is slated for noon.
