Old Westbury, N.Y. The Red Storm avenged yesterdays 6-3 senior day loss to the New York Institute of Technology this afternoon, spoiling the Bears senior day with a 4-1 win at Presidents Field. St. Johns improves to 31-19, while NYIT falls to 16-27-1.
Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Jason Kane (Rutherford, N.J.) were responsible for driving in all of the Red Storms runs. Rozema went 3-for-5 at the plate with a RBI and two runs scored. Kane was 2-for-5, with a double and driving in three runs. St. Johns touched NYIT starter Karl Steingrubner early on with one in the first. Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, NY) lined a two-out triple to right field and came around to score on a single by Kane. Rozema led off the third with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt-error on the pitcher by Bilezikjian. Rozema then scored for the second time in two at-bats on a groundout by Kane to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead. Up 2-1 heading into the fourth inning, sophomore catcher Asa Grunenwald (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) reached on a fielders choice and advanced to third on a single by freshman outfielder Josh Stewart (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg). Rozema then ripped a one-out single to right-center, scoring Grunenwald for the 3-1 lead. The Red Storm capped off their scoring in the seventh, Rozema singled through the right side and scored on a one-out double by Kane. Freshman pitcher Jeff Ford (Hamden, Conn./Notre Dame) pitched 3.1 innings of relief for the win. He improves to 2-0 this season. Sophomore Vinny Mannese (Marlboro, N.Y.) pitched the ninth inning for his first save of the season. He struck out two in the inning. St. Johns will conclude its regular season this weekend, as they travel to New Brunswick, N.J. for a crucial three-game series with Rutgers. Saturdays doubleheader begins at noon.
