JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The New York Institute of Technology scored single runs in three of the last four innings and two relievers combined to allow only two hits in the last six innings as the Bears upset St. Johns, 6-3, at The Ballpark Wednesday night, spoiling Senior Night for the Red Storm. The loss ends a four-game winning streak for SJU, dropping the team to 30-19 overall.
With the game tied at three in the sixth inning, Tech shortstop Mike Gaffney, who went 4-for-4, hit a one-out single and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches from St. Johns reliever Greg Holmes (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville). First baseman Kevin Perrucci followed with a single to left, breaking the tie and giving the Bears the lead for good. New York Tech relievers Dan Britton and Tom Park shut down the Red Storm in the final six innings of the game. Britton, who picked up the win and improved to 2-0, went three innings, allowing one hit, walking three and striking out one. Tom Park entered the game in the seventh inning and after giving up a leadoff single to freshman shortstop Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn), retired the final eight batters for his second save of the season. The Bears had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Sophomore starter Tom Klemm (Salem, N.H./Salem) issued a leadoff walk to Bryan Goelz and he moved to second on Ryan Nevins single up the middle. Goelz advanced on a double steal attempt and scored on a throwing error. St. Johns, however, scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back. Junior centerfielder Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) hit a two-out single, stole second and scored when senior first baseman Chris Fallon (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) singled up the middle. Fallon moved to second when senior Eric Potts (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park) walked and scored on a single through the right side by junior third baseman Jason Kane (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford). New York Tech (16-26-1), however added single runs in the second, and one more in the third to take the lead back, 3-2. St. Johns tied the game in the bottom of the third when Bilezikjian hit a leadoff single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Kanes groundout. Bilezikjian went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored in a losing effort, while Kane singled and drove in two runs. The Red Storm and Bears play again on Thursday, with New York Tech hosting St. Johns at 3:30 p.m.
