JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Junior Marc Goldberg (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and sophomore Geno Orsogna (Norfolk, Mass./Bishop Feehan) combined to throw a five-hitter, leading St. Johns to a 3-1 win over C.W. Post in a non-league game on Saturday afternoon at The Ballpark. The win, St. Johns third straight, improves the team to 29-18 overall.
Goldberg started and went five innings, allowing only two hits while walking two and striking out five. He picked up the win, improving to 5-5 overall, and lowering his team-best earned run average to 2.18. Orsogna, the Red Storms No. 2 starter, enter the game in the sixth and finished, giving up three hits and striking out five batters. He earned his first save of the year. The Red Storm scored one run in each of the first three innings en route to the win. Junior J.P. Cirigliano (Flushing, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) reached base on an error, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Senior Chris Fallon (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) hit a long fly ball to center, driving home Cirigliano with the games first run. In the second, sophomore Chad Cambra (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) was walked with one out and moved to second on a groundout. Freshman Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) followed with a single up the middle and Cambra just beat the throw home, giving St. Johns a 2-0 lead. The Red Storm scored their final run in the third. Cirigliano drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third when Fallon lined out to right. Senior catcher Eric Potts (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park) singled up the middle to score Cirigliano and give SJU a 3-0 lead. Goldberg, meanwhile, cruised through the first five innings. He walked a batter with one out in the first, but was aided by a double play and then allowed a leadoff single, but got out of that when Rozema made a nice stop of a hard ground ball up the middle and flipped it to Cirigliano to begin the double play. Orsogna entered the game in the sixth and struck out three in the first two innings. Rozema went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and an RIB to lead the Red Storm, while Potts added a single and an RBI. Freshman Josh Stewart (Boalsburg, Pa./Boalsburg Area), Kane and junior Billy Graiser (Muttontown, N.Y./Miller Place) had the Red Storms other hits. St. Johns returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Manhattan at 7 p.m. in a non-league game at The Ballpark.
