JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Notre Dame used a pair of complete games from All-American pitchers Aaron Heilman and Danny Tamayo as the No. 1 ranked Fighting Irish beat St. Johns 3-2 and 5-0 in a BIG EAST doubleheader in front of over 700 fans at The Ballpark Saturday afternoon. The losses end a four-game winning streak for St. Johns and drops them to 26-17 overall and 13-7 in the conference. Notre Dame improves to 39-6-1 overall and 17-2 in the BIG EAST.
In game one, three-time first-team All-American Heilman was backed up by three first-inning runs and hung on for a 3-2 win. The Fighting Irish scored three runs off of St. Johns starter Geno Orsogna (Norfolk, Mass./Bishop Feehan) in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Steve Stanley doubled down the left field line and, after the next two batters were retired, Brian Stavisky singled to right, scoring Stanley and giving ND a 1-0 lead. Consecutive walks to Kris Billmaier and Paul OToole loaded the bases for Andrew Bushey, who laced a single to left-center, increasing Notre Dames lead to 3-0. The Red Storm put runners on first and second with two out in the bottom of the inning, but were not able to plate a run. Orsogna settled down after the first inning and retired 11 of the next 14 batters. St. Johns finally got on the board in the fourth inning. Junior Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) walked to lead off the inning, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Heilman wild pitch. The margin was cut to 3-2 in the sixth. Senior Chris Fallon (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) reached on a fielders choice and moved to second after Heilman issued a two-out walk. Junior Jason Kane (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) brought home Fallon with a bloop single to left. Heilman, who improved to 11-0 with the win, struck out two batters in the seventh inning to end the game. He allowed two earned runs on three hits, walking three and striking out eight batters. In game two, the Irish scored a run in each of the first four innings and Tamayo retired the first 11 batters of the game en route to a 5-0 win. St. Johns starter Marc Goldberg (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) walked Stanley to lead off the game and Alec Porzel reached base on an error. Porzel was thrown out stealing second, and Stanley moved to third on the play. A single to the left side brought home Stanley with NDs first run. In the second, OToole reached on an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a walk, Stanley hit a two-out single to left-center, increasing the margin to 2-0. In the third, Porzel hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a groundout. Billmaier was hit by a pitch and OToole walked to load the bases for Bushey, who flew out to the warning track in right, scoring Porzel with Notre Dames third run. Joe Thaman led off the fourth inning with a single and moved to second on a bunt off of SJU reliever Greg Holmes (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville). After a walk to Sollman, Porzel reached base on a fielders choice to put runners on the corners and Staviskys single to left scored Thaman, giving ND a 4-0 lead. Bilezikjian singled twice and stole two bases to lead St. Johns. He was 3-for-5 on the day. Holmes pitched five innings of solid relief, allowing one unearned run on four hits, walking two and striking out one. The Red Storm and the Irish will close out the three-game series on Sunday. A nine-inning game will begin at noon.
