St. John's Epee Fencer Bratton Takes Second At 2007 NCAA Championships
 

 

The St. John's men's fencing team concluded play at the 2007 NCAA Championships with senior co-captain Benjamin Bratton taking home the silver medal in men's epee.

The Red Storm will enter the women's portion of the tournament with 82 total team points and tied for fouth place with Ohio State University.

Bratton advanced to the gold medal bout after defeating Dwight Smith of Columbia University in the semifinals earlier that day. Also competing in epee was sophomore Stan Vaksman. He took seventh place overall.

In the men's foil, senior Henry Kennard finished sixth and newcomer Alexis Landreville took 16th place overall.

Meanwhile, in men's sabre sophomore Luther Clement took fifth place overall, while freshman Torian Brown finished in 18th place.

The women's fencing team begins action at the 2007 NCAA Championships on Saturday, March 24 at Drew University. Women’s captain and foil fencer Monika Golebiewski, sabre fencer Olya Ovtchinnikova and epee fencer Tanya Novakovska will all head into the NCAA Championships as No. 1 seeds.

Also competing for the women will be No. 2 seed Dagmara Wozniak, who is ranked as the No. 1 Junior Women’s Sabre fencer in the world, and No. 3 seed Reka Szele, who fences with the epee. Katia Larchanka earned All-America honors a year ago and is the No. 4 seed in the women’s foil.

The men’s team will be represented by senior co-captain Ben Bratton, newcomer Alexis Landerville and sabre fencers Luther Clement and Torian Brown. Bratton secured a No. 2 spot in the men’s epee while Landerville will be the No. 3 seed in the men’s foil. Clement and Brown own the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively.
