The Red Storm men’s and women’s fencing teams hosted the annual St. John’s Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 11, and went undefeated against visiting schools Rutgers and Sacred Heart. The men’s foil squad was the sharpest of the day, posting a perfect 18-0 record. In the first round of the event, St. John’s faced Rutgers inside the strip. The women cruised to a 24-3 victory while the men went 21-6. The women’s foil team, comprised of Monika Golebiewski, Katia Larchanka and newcomer Kate Traber, were untouchable and earned 9 points for the Red Storm. The men’s foil team followed suit as Sam Wunderlich, Henry Kennard and Alexis Landerville were also undefeated. The second round featured a different opponent but more of the same results for the Red Storm. The women’s team defeated Sacred Heart 22-5 and the men went 23-4. Once again, the men’s foil squad anchored the team and finished the day undefeated. The women’s epee squad stole the spotlight against Sacred Heart as Joanna Guy, Reka Szele and Tanya Novakovska went 9-0. As a team, many members of the fencing team finished with perfect records: Joanna guy (Epee), Olya Ovtchinnikova (Sabre), Reka Szele (Epee), Monika Golebiewski (Foil), and Luther Clement (Sabre). Adam Rodeny (Epee), Tanya Novakovska (Epee), Ela Gray (Sabre), Njimy Cadet (Sabre), Torian Brown (Sabre) and Mykhaylo Mokretsov were 5-1 for the day. Golebiewski now leads both teams with 46 wins overall this season. Next up for the Red Storm will be the Northeast Regional Championships on March 11, hosted by Tufts University.
