CHEER CLINIC

Description: This clinic is for all high school/ college girls/guys interested in learning/ perfecting stunts, cheers, chants and basic tumbling that is necessary to make a college cheerleading team.

You must email the coach at missmafes@optonline.net for medical paperwork and be cleared from the training room in order to try out.

Besides being located in the most exciting city in the world (New York!), St. John's University is home to Red Storm Athletics, with some of the most prominent teams in the nation. The Red Storm basketball games take place at Carnesecca Arena and at Madison Square Garden , the most famous arena in the world! Living down the street from the City That Never Sleeps has its privileges. The squad makes television appearances each year, including commercials, news programs, movie openings and even cheer documentaries. And the Most Famous Arena In The World is never lacking in some of the most famous people in the world.

Service First!
We have a great time at the numerous appearances we do throughout the year, from pre-game pep rallies to charity appearances for the Ronald McDonald House and the New York Marathon. If you are interested in having the St. John's cheerleaders at your event, contact coach Toni Mafes at missmafes@optonline.net. Donations to the squad are appreciated.

Coach's Corner
Coach Toni Mafes is a former St. John's University cheerleader. Being a St. John's cheerleader definitely has its advantages, such as traveling with your teams to championships and being on national television.

Tryouts
As a member of the team, you would have the privilege to cheer for Women's and Men's Basketball, Soccer and Lacrosse teams. You will also have a chance to join our competition team which competes at UCA College Nationals in January. So if you are interested in being a part of the best squad in New York City give us a call. We're always looking for enthusiastic and talented cheerleaders with a love for Red Storm sports.

IN ORDER TO TRY OUT YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING:

Enrollment at St. John's University

Proof of Health Insurance
An approved University Physical (You must contact the St. John's University nurse's office in Newman Hall for information)

You must then have your physical(attn. cheerleading) forwarded to the training room in Alumni Hall (attn. Ron Linfonte) at least two days prior to tryouts.

Requirements include:

Flyers:
Hyperextended jumps
Great cheer skills (will perform one cheer and one band dance)
Minimum of a standing back handspring
Experience coed partner stunting

Female bases/tumblers:
Hyperextended jumps
Minimum of a standing tuck and round-off back handspring back tuck
Great cheer skills (will perform one cheer and one band dance)
Must be able to single-base stunt and throw baskets

Guys:
Possess good physical strength and Tumbling a plus Stunt requirements: Toss chair, Toss to hands
