Upon graduating from St. John's in 1981 with a degree in philosophy, Mary Pat Beirne joined the Athletic Department as an assistant to the athletic director, John W. Kaiser. After three years in that position, she was named assistant director of intramurals in 1984. In 1987, Beirne was promoted to assistant director of athletics. Beirne was promoted to associate director of athletics for development in December of 2000. Prior to the 2002-03 academic year, Beirne was named associate director of student development.
Beirne also serves on NCAA and St. John's University committees. She was a member of the NCAA Fencing Championships Committee and the Women's History Month Committee, and is the co-chair for the Women of Distinction Award Committee.
In the spring of 2002, Beirne was awarded the Outstanding Administrative Achievement Medal by St. John's University president Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M.
Beirne resides in Garden City, N.Y., with her three children, Kelli (14), Kristy (12) and Mattingly (after Don) (8).
