QUEENS, N.Y. - The Office of Athletic Development invites all Red Storm fans to participate in the 2007 Doc Gimmler Classic, a golf fundraising event to benefit St. John's 17 varsity athletic programs.
The 2007 Gimmler Classic will take place on Monday, Oct. 15, and give St. John's fans the opportunity to play at the exclusive Deepdale Golf Club in Manhassett, N.Y. Deepdale is considered one of the most prestigious courses in the area, and has been cited by several golf publications as one of the Top 25 Courses in America.
The golf club's relocated course, with the stunning Grace mansion serving as the clubhouse, was officially opened in 1955. Deepdale's role as one of the preeminent private clubs in the country continues to this day, welcoming a diverse membership of men and women.
The 2007 Gimmler Classic begins with lunch at the clubhouse and a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner and prizes follow the day's round, which is listed at $1,250 per golfer and $5,000 per foursome.
The event is named for the late John "Doc" Gimmler, the legendary golf coach and administrator whose career in St. John's Athletics spanned more than four decades. With Gimmler at the helm as coach, his golf teams won nine BIG EAST Championships, 10 Metropolitan championships and made five NCAA Tournament appearances. Gimmler was a 1949 University grad and varsity baseball player that participated in the first College World Series (1949) before stints as head golf coach, head athletic trainer and associate director of athletics. He passed away in 1996.
Interested fans are encouraged to act quickly as available spots are limited. For more information, or to reserve a space or foursome in the outing, please contact Valerie Richardson at 718-990-7566 or via e-mail at richardv@stjohns.edu.
