QUEENS, N.Y. - More than 45 Red Storm student-athletes from eight teams participated in the 2008 St. John's Relay For Life Friday night into early Saturday morning, April 4-5, joining the University community and the American Cancer Society to bring hope and faith to many individuals affected by cancer. Thus far, the event has raised more than $55,000 and could reach $60,000 by the end of August. The athletics team, nicknamed "Athletes Storming for a Cure" was the third highest contributing team to the event, raising $1,602.16 towards the fight against cancer.
"The event was very successful, as usual," said John Link, manager of special events at the American Cancer Society. "Since last year it has grown immensely: participation-wise, we have over 1,000 people and more than 95 different teams. We have a huge goal of $60,000, which I expect that we will make. The two speeches by the student-athlete and the student who survived cancer were unbelievable. It's really remarkable to hear such inspirational words and it's great to see everyone from campus out for this Relay For Life event."
The festivities began at 6:45 p.m. Friday, with an opening ceremony led by emcee John Kelly of the School Spirit Committee. Before the walk began, two speakers told inspirational stories of how cancer had affected their lives and how they overcame the fears it caused. One of those speakers was sophomore Courtney Curby of the women's soccer team, who shared the story of her family's struggles in dealing with her brother Jake's diagnosis with leukemia, which he was thankfully cured of.
"It's really important to be able to share stories of inspiration with so many people," said Curby. "There are always people that are going through traumatic life events, whether its cancer or something else. In hearing other people's stories we can draw a lot of strength as well as hope from what other people have gone through."
The speeches were followed by words of wisdom and thanks via video from those who could not be in attendance, including University President Fr. Donald J. Harrington, University Provost Dr. Julia Upton, legendary men's basketball head coach Lou Carnesecca, the women's soccer team and the baseball team, who put together an enjoyable acrobatic performance before thanking those in attendance. There was an introduction of the teams in attendance before the all-night, non-competitive walk-a-thon began. Cancer survivors walked the opening lap as they were honored for their will and strength that helped them courageously beat the disease.
Members of the men's and women's basketball, fencing, women's golf, men's and women's soccer, track and field and volleyball teams, along with the dance team and pep band participated in the overnight event.
"It's inspiring to have so many student-athletes participate because this is such an important cause," said Lucy Pesce, Associate Athletics Director for Leadership and Special Events. "We know how busy all of them are and for them to take the time out tonight to do this really means a lot."
The event was organized by Dr. Kathryn Hutchinson, Executive Director of Student Wellness, along with student co-chairs Christina Zaccarelli and Vincy Chacko. The relay honored cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle with the deadly disease. It was an emotion-filled night of courage and personal triumph.
"It's a big impact having us (the student-athletes) come out and show that we care about those who have been affected by cancer," said Paris Horne of the men's basketball team. "We're showing our support and letting them know that we're there for them. Tonight is about giving back to the community. My grandmother died from cancer, so I just wanted to come out and support everyone that has cancer and try to help as much as I can."
